If My Characters Had Winter Break: Traditions Around the States

This time of year I’m especially appreciative of Florida. Largely for the same reasons many of my books take place in Florida. The high today is 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius)— and it’s almost December!

Just like Florida can do a mean HalloweenFlorida can pull off a heck of a holiday/Christmas/winter celebration, too! One of my favorites is the parades at Disney World, and the way the Magic Kingdom lights up central Florida.

Disney Christmas Holidays

If Judge Willa Carson were visiting Michigan right now, as she does in Cold Justice, what would she be doing?

Christmas in the Village is a tempting option. It’s a weekend-long celebration in Traverse City with a different Christmas Concert every night. Plus shopping opportunities and carriage rides. Willa Carson loves her convertible in Tampa, but she’s not a fan of the cold. So here’s the question for our consideration: Would Willa go on the carriage ride? Leave a comment below and let me know what you think! (Not familiar with Willa Carson? Get to know her in Cold Justice or another book in the Hunt for Justice Series.)

FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar often find themselves passing through Washington, D.C. along their Hunt for Jack Reacher. If they passed through in December with time to spare (yeah, right!), what holiday festivities could they find? Ice skating on Washington Harbor’s rink is beautiful in December, though Carlos Gaspar may not be so graceful as the ninety-nine pound Kim Otto.

Washington Harbor Ice Skating

With a little extra time, Otto and Gaspar could make a day trip to George Washington’s estate at the plantation of Mount Vernon, watch chocolate-making demonstrations, and experience the way the First Couple would have spent their Christmas day.

For rookie journalist Jordan Fox of my False Truth Mystery Serial, I’m certain there is no such thing as a winter break! Even on her days off, Jordan Fox has mysteries to solve. But should she find herself at the University of Tampa, maybe she would take 15 minutes to to on the Victorian Christmas stroll.

What December traditions do you enjoy where you live?

When Can You Afford To Fail?

Call them what you will. Risk takers. Speculators. Explorers. All three can have similar implications in certain scenarios. All three are also descriptions of oil wildcatters. In this day and age, a wildcatter is generally someone who is drilling for oil in a spot where there’s no record of oil existing. It used to be […]

Florida Can Do Halloween, Too!

What are the Halloween traditions where you live? In Florida, where many of my books take place, it doesn’t always feel the way you might expect a typical Halloween to feel. The average temperature on Halloween in Tampa is 72 degrees Fahrenheit. The record low was in 1963 at 43 degrees, and the record high was in 1971 […]
