From Fiction to Nonfiction and Back Again

I grew up a voracious reader. As a child, I read everything (and still do!). But my favorite was fiction. Especially mystery/suspense/thriller.

Books Reading

When I worked as an attorney, I not only did more than my fair share of reading, but of course wrote lots of papers. Legal stuff. All nonfiction, of course.

When the tides turned, I made martinis (with a twist!) out of lemons and returned to my first love, fiction. Taking up writing mysteries full time, I found that fiction was truly my medium of choice.

And it still is. But lately, feeling inspired by my own studies of Lee Child’s books, I’ve been getting in touch with my background in essay writing. I wrote a piece on the importance of his book Persuader, and it was featured on the website The Rap SheetIn the essay, I talk about what makes Persuader unique among all other Reacher books by Lee Child, and how the book and some firsthand experience with it informed the writing of my newest release in the Hunt for Jack Reacher Series, Deep Cover Jack.

I have a second feature article out as well right now. Omnimystery News interviewed me about the behind-the-scenes work of creating the Hunt for Jack Reacher series, and we get in to some more personal topics, too. Here’s a snippet of one of my answers about the main characters in the Hunt for Jack Reacher books, FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar.

“What appeals to me about these characters? Everything. I like the respect and camaraderie they have and how determined they are. They never give up, no matter what happens. Otto is anxious about most things, but she does it anyway. To me, that’s the very definition of bravery.”

While I love doing this type of work in between plotting new mysteries, it’s time to put my mystery-writing hat back on! My next thriller to be released is entitled Blood Trails, and is set for release on October 4, 2016. I really hope  you’re going to love Michael Flint, the Heir Hunter of last resort as much as I love writing him!
