We’ve been talking about the unputdownable Michael Flint Series. Last time, I promised to share the inspiration for this first book. So let’s get right to it, shall we?

One of the most often asked questions any writer gets is “Where do you get your ideas?” Honestly, that’s a bit of magic. But sometimes, a real life event sparks a story. That’s what happened with Blood Trails.

A friend of mine, we’ll call her Suzie, actually had this exact experience — only better.

Suzie, was contacted by a land man whose job was to locate heirs to certain Oklahoma mineral rights.

A legitimate land man is usually an independent contractor who bridges the gap between people who own oil and gas rights and oil companies who want to buy them.

Suzie said she had never lived in Oklahoma, owned property there, or been related to anyone who did. The land man assured her otherwise.

Frankly, Suzie thought the whole thing was a scam.

She was wrong.

It turned out that her long-deceased grandfather, a man she’d never met, had owned what were worthless mineral rights sixty years ago.

With the advent of new mining technologies and changes to drilling laws, the mineral rights became valuable.

But the rights had become fragmented over time and his heirs had “disappeared” from the property indexes and scattered across the country.

The land man located the heirs and facilitated the transfer of mineral rights to an oil company.

Eventually, substantial royalties that had been accumulating were paid out to Suzie, her sister, and Suzie’s son. They will continue to receive royalties for years into the future. What a happy ending!

And, of course, being a thriller writer, I thought: what a great premise for a book, or a series!

So Michael Flint was born.

I wrote that first book. And then a second one. And soon, I’ll write a third. Michael Flint is someone I love to write and I know you love to read, judging from all the requests I receive from you to write more Flint!

It’s taken a while to get Flint back on track. But now, we begin again. If Michael Flint catches on this time, with your help, we’ll have many more Flint books to keep us all enthralled! Nothing would make me (and you, I hope) happier.

Oh — almost forgot — I’ve also added one of your favorite characters to the series, Kim Otto’s former parter, Carlos Gaspar. (More on that next time…)

So —

We’ll begin with Blood Trails, releasing on June 21, which has been revised and edited a bit from the original. Next up will be Trace Evidence, releasing on January 24, 2023, also revised and edited from the first editions. The third book in the new series will be revealed in good time…
