5 Recent, Weird, and TRUE Pieces of DNA News

As a crime writer, I love DNA to the moon and back.

DNA Fact

Seriously— DNA is so valuable for clues and evidence in the books I write, I don’t know what I’d do without it. Well, no one would exist without it. But you know what I mean.

DNA is frequently the subject of mind-bending news during my research. Stuff you just know I’m going to find a use for in one of my books, sooner or later. Right?

Here are 5 recent, weird, and TRUE pieces of DNA news:

  1. A Washington man learned that, technically, the father of his son was someone who was never born.
  2. Scientists and an artist partnered to artificially grow an ear made of Vincent Van Gogh’s actual DNA.
  3. A study shows that secondary DNA can be found at crime scenes. In other words, DNA could be present from someone who shook hands with someone who then held a knife that was used in a murder.
  4. This one is a bit disturbing. It’s about hot dogs. In case you’re eating breakfast, I won’t tell you anything except… click if you dare.
  5. And my fifth piece of recent, weird, and true DNA news for you is….
Some of us may be hard-wired to crave high-calorie, high-fat foods.

So #5 tells me that my coffee addiction might not be genetic, but it’s not my fault that I’m craving a big piece of pumpkin cheesecake right now, right?!

Your Memories Might Not Be As Private As You Thought

I’m fascinated by DNA. It answers so many questions about our origins and development. To me, DNA proves that nature trumps nurture, almost every time. Do events shape us or do we shape our world by who we are and how we engage? You probably can guess which way I’m leaning. Doing research for my most […]

When One Book Closes, Another Opens

When I was writing earlier this week about how Dominick Dunne went from novelist to investigative journalism, it reminded me that my friend, Lee Child, worked in television production at Granada Television before becoming a novelist. Lee was a fan of crime novels, but had never been completely happy with the ones he read. He once […]

What’s your favorite place to get a caffeine fix? Your kitchen? Starbucks? Or some other spot? FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar, like Jack Reacher, will take coffeee wherever they can get it. Usually it’s a diner, or some office building where they’re meeting someone for an interview that they learned would be […]

Dominick Dunne: Before He Was A Journalist

I’ve been working on a couple of new Jess Kimball novels, and am reminded of her strong connection to Dominick Dunne. You know who Dominick Dunne is, right? I’ve written about him before, and about the reasons Jess Kimball admires him: https://dianecapri.com/2014/08/lunch-dominick-dunne/ Like Kimball, Dunne was an investigative journalist. He wrote essays and articles for Vanity […]

Flying? Coffee? Reading? There’s An App For That

You saw this week that I told you about 4 of Kim Otto’s Rules, right? One of her guiding principles is to never sleep on an airplane. Her theory is that in any airplane disaster, you have a better chance of surviving if you’re awake. So I found this app that I’m thinking Kim Otto […]

Kim Otto’s Rules: Lesson II

Have you read Jack Reacher’s Rules? It’s a handbook of sorts, full of helpful tips and nuggets of wisdom inspired by the way Lee Child’s Jack Reacher lives off the grid and operates without dying. So far, at least. If you’ve read books in my Hunt for Jack Reacher series, you know hunting Reacher is deadly. […]

The Scariest Bookshelves You’ve Ever Seen

Today is Halloween. So are these the scariest bookshelves you’ve ever seen, or what?! These creepy bookshelves remind me of a bookstore in St. Petersburg, FL that’s said to be haunted. It’s called Haslam’s Book Store, founded in 1933, and it happens to also be the biggest new and used bookstore in the state of […]
