What If You Are A Missing Person?

Seriously. You could be a missing person and not even know it. Any of us could be.

As you know, stories about missing people fascinate me. I’ve written about various ways people go missing in several of my books. Since I’m a mystery/thriller/suspense writer, the answers are usually crime-related, of course.

But the reality is that we might all be “missing” to someone who is looking for us. When someone is looking for you, but they don’t exactly know who you are, that complicates matters even more.

In fact, you could be an heir to a fortune. If only the right people could figure out your name and how to contact you…

You see, I’m thinking about all this because of the new series I’m writing now about Michael Flint the Heir Hunter. The project has me studying some fascinating questions. Like how do heir hunters go about finding living, long-lost relatives? What resources do heir hunters use?

William Shakespeare's Will

Here’s the short answer. Some of the resources they use are ones we already know about. Things like electoral rolls, or pollbooks, marriage and birth records, family tree/genealogy websites, and social media. And then there’s the good old-fashioned method — hitting the streets and talking to people who might know somebody who knows somebody. But there’s a lot more to Michael Flint’s brand of heir hunting than that!

I’ll be going into more depth over the coming weeks here on my blog. Much more to come as I complete the writing of the first book in this new series! Stay tuned!

The Astronaut Beach House and More About Cape Canaveral

I love to write about places all over Florida because so many of my books take place in the Sunshine State. We’ve been talking lately about Cape Canaveral, and this week I dug up some more fun facts that you might find interesting: The Astronaut Beach House You know about Cape Canaveral Air Force Station […]

Agatha Christie’s Vacation Home

Where do great minds think? I often wonder where other authors do their thinking. I know Lee Child works from an office in his Manhattan apartment. As for myself, I work part of the year writing mysteries and thrillers in my Florida office, and I spend part of the year writing and researching books in Traverse […]

Why I Love Florida, Reason #5: Cape Canaveral

In a recent blog post, I referred to a cartoon that called the Cape Canaveral area of Florida “NASA’s Graveyard.” It was a joke, of course, but as a Florida resident and a Florida lover and an author who writes about Florida frequently, it’s worth pointing out what a neat place Cape Canaveral really is. In […]

Wi-Fi Precautions To Take When Traveling

FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar have layers upon layers of security surrounding their wireless devices. Only the most determined hackers can penetrate them. Which is why Otto worries slightly less about confidential information getting hacked by fellow passengers on an airplane. But what about you? Should you be worried about your personal […]

Good News For Traveling Wi-Fi Lovers

Do you use WiFi when you travel by airplane? I do — but the connection can be spotty. There’s nothing more frustrating than being in the midst of an email conversation with a publisher or a reader when the internet connection drops out and the conversation comes to a sudden halt, leaving the party on the […]

Why I Love Florida, Reason #4: 900 Hidden Springs

If you have a basic familiarity with the state of Florida, you know it’s a peninsula, surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. But Florida is also home to many more “hidden” bodies of water. Of course, anything hidden is great fodder for my books! Have you ever […]

10 Guides From Diane Capri

Researching odd and obscure facts is one of the fun parts of my job. When I’m writing a new thriller, I’m often buried in online searching as well as pounding the pavement for great settings and interviewing witnesses for the kind of authenticity readers love about my books. Sometimes, I share the real world facts […]

Why I Love Florida, Reason #3

Florida is a crazy place, but I love this wacky state. One of the wild things about Florida is that you can travel to a dozen different cultures and landscapes without traveling far from home. Sure, some cities are a ten-hour drive (or more) away from each other, but it’s all within a day’s drive […]
