Full Metal Jack and Back to the Beginning

As you know, the Lee Child source book for Full Metal Jack is The Affair. I chose The Affair because it’s the story of the end of Jack Reacher’s career with the army and the start of his life as we know it.

So in a real sense, we’re going “back to the beginning” in Full Metal Jack.

Full Metal Jack is a special book for me for a lot of reasons. I really hope you’ll love it — and tell all your friends!

For starters, this is my tenth novel in this series.
Can you believe it? Number 10!! How time flies!

I’ve actually been spending a lot of time with FBI Special Agent Kim Otto for eleven years now. And I just love her, don’t you? I’d love to have her over for dinner and just talk with her for hours. I find her fascinating. Which is a good thing, considering how long it takes me to write these books, right?

I developed the first book in the series, Don’t Know Jack, over a three year period beginning in 2009.  Lee Child and I had many, many conversations as the first book was developing.

The series concept came first: What if someone was looking for Jack Reacher? Yikes!

The second question followed naturally from the first: Who would be hunting Reacher?

As Kim Otto came to life, it was important for her to be brave. I wanted her to feel fear, face challenges, and deal with them. Because let’s face it, Reacher has supreme confidence that he will always win. And he does. Every time. Kim Otto doesn’t always win. But she never, ever gives up. To me, that’s the very definition of bravery.

The third question became: Why would Kim Otto do this?

Knowing few of the risks she would face, Kim Otto begins the hunt for Reacher because it’s her job.

Later, it becomes a matter of pride. She started the job, and she’s going to finish it. Or die trying. (Ha! See what I did there? 😏 )
