Saturday Special: Reviving The Past

Happy Saturday, one and all! Congratulations on making it to the weekend!

This week, we here in Diane Capri World have been doing a bit of reflecting on the past. Maybe it has something to do with Spring Cleaning, getting a new start, and all that.

1. For starters, Deadly Dozen hit the USA Today Bestsellers List for the 5th week in a row!!!! This had me thinking about my humble beginnings as a writer, how long you and I have been friends, and where our relationship has taken us. Straight to the New York Times and USA Today Bestsellers Lists, that’s where it’s taken us! I can’t thank you all enough for reading and for coming along for a great ride so far! Imagine all the places we’ll go from here!

2. Happy Belated Pony Express Appreciation Day! I declared April 3rd the occasion, inspired by some reflection on the art of writing letters. Several of you wrote to say that you feel the lost art of letter writing keenly. I have a hand written letter from a friend of my grandparents to me on the day I was born. The author welcomed me to the world and said lovely things about my parents and grandparents. It’s one I’ll always cherish. I love email and all things Internet because it connects me so quickly and easily to you. But I do hope we never lose the art of snail mail letters. You can read the blog post about snail mail HERE.

3. Earlier in the week, I wrote a bit about a really cool institution in Florida called The Floridan Palace Hotel. Once the tallest building in downtown Tampa, it went through a rough patch for decades, and has now emerged victorious. Read about its colorful history HERE. When you’re next looking for a delightful meal in Tampa, please go there — and then tell me what you think!

What part of your history are you feeling grateful for this weekend? Maybe it’s a good time to take a step back, look at where you came from, and be thankful for everyone who shaped any progress you’ve made.

Once again, I extend my thanks to YOU, the best readers in the world!

Meanwhile —

Pony Express Appreciation Day

I’m declaring today Pony Express Appreciation Day! You know why, don’t you? Today is the 154th anniversary of the Pony Express! Everybody, take a moment to thank your postwoman or man! That’s right – on this very day in 1860, teams of horse and riders left two spots in the United States – Sacramento, California, and […]

Tampa Gets Its Palace Back

There’s an institution in downtown Tampa that’s had a more interesting life than you, me, and Jack Reacher combined. It’s called The Floridan, and it’s a bar, a hotel, and a restaurant. That doesn’t make it unusual. But its life story does. The Floridan Hotel, also known as the Hotel Floridan, opened in 1927, with […]

Saturday Special: Change Is In The Air

Change is in the air. Do you feel it? I mean that quite literally — central Florida is COVERED in pollen! Apparently spring took its cue from the calendar and arrived here in full force. Antihistamines to the rescue! Have the seasons started changing yet where you live? In addition to the weather, several other […]

Revealing Fingerprints

109 years ago today, for the first time ever, fingerprint evidence was used in a high-profile murder case. A pair of shopkeepers in London — Thomas and Ann Farrow — were found beaten to death. Scotland Yard detected the motive to be robbery. By examining the Farrows’ cash box, they were able to pick out […]

More Stratotankers Coming To MacDill

Tampa’s MacDill Air Force Base isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. That’s the message implied from an announcement that the Base will soon be adding eight Stratotankers to its fleet. Sounds impressive, right? But what’s a Stratotanker? Its full name is a KC-135 Stratotanker, and it’s an aircraft designed to refuel other planes, mid-air. It lies […]

Tampa Bay AirFest 2014

This weekend, jets are going to soar over Tampa Bay. It’s  Tampa Bay AirFest 2014, an impressive display of aerial accomplishments at MacDill Air Force Base. After a two year absence, AirFest is back! The event draws large crowds of about 150,000 over the two days. It’s a special weekend because MacDill opens its gates to […]

Readers Name Favorite TV Shows

Recently, I posed this question to readers on My Facebook page: What’s your favorite TV show? I write in the mystery/thriller/suspense genre and I wondered how reader interests were reflected in television preferences in the US and around the world. Responses were varied, fun, and very enlightening. (We’ll get to that in a second.) First, for […]
