What to do in San Diego

Have you experienced the rich culture of San Diego? In Jack of Spades, Agent Otto is too busy tracking down Jack Reacher to take in the city’s many attractions but if she had free time, she would add these five pit stops to her “must see” list.

Jack of Spades

Known for its beaches, craft beer and cuisine, San Diego is well worth a visit. The second largest city in California, San Diego boasts beautiful weather year-round with a temperature average of high40s to mid60s during winter months and mid60s to mid70s in the summer. The city hasn’t experienced snow since 1967 and enjoys an average of 263 sunny days annually.

Whether you enjoy yoga, whale watching or visiting historical relics, the city truly offers something for everyone.

Here are Agent Otto’s top picks if she could spend a day or two on vacation in San Diego.

#1 She would start her day with a visit to one of the many famous flower displays. The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park offers an amazing display of 600,000-acres of beautiful wildflowers.

#2 Her next stop would be San Diego’s Embarcadero to take in one of the famous harbor tours where she would learn about the city’s maritime history and see the historic ships.

#3 After working up an appetite, she would stop by The Fish Market to fill up on some of the freshest seafood in the world. Just above the market is the aptly named restaurant, Top of the Market, which offers visitors a place to sit down and enjoy the Oyster Bar while overlooking the gorgeous view of the San Diego Bay. Exhibition-Style cooking also keeps guests entertained while they wait for their meal.

Afterward, Otto might enjoy a relaxing mid-day drink from one of the many local craft breweries. Check out this map to find the best brews in the city!

#4 Next up is a stop at one of the city’s numerous festivals. Wanderlust 108 is hosted in March and celebrates healthy lifestyles where people can partake in activities such as yoga and meditation. There’s also the annual Cinco de Mayo celebration with traditional folklorico dancing, music and authentic cuisine. The San Diego Bay Wine & Food Festival is another event worth checking out. For three days each November, the festival offers an extensive collection of wine and food.

#5 Otto’s last (and perhaps most important) stop would be at one of San Diego’s many gorgeous sandy beaches. Mission Beach is one of the most popular locations, equipped with a boardwalk that is perfect for a relaxing stroll and family-friendly activities. For those seeking a little more excitement, the Pacific Beach is a fun place to enjoy the nightlife.

Of course, as a thriller author I’m always looking at the darker side of things. Fortunately for Otto, San Diego has a relatively low crime rate compared to most large cities. It’s estimated to be 34% safer than all cities in the country with a 15% lower crime than the national average.

Even so, Agent Otto knows from experience to never let her guard down.
