Why We NEED To Attend The Key Lime Festival Next Year

Key West holds a Key Lime Festival every year. How did we miss this?! This year it’s July 2-4, 2016… but I wonder if it’s too early to sign up for next year?!

As a snowbird, I spend much of the year in Florida, which means I’ve taken my fair share of trips to Key West. A couple years ago I even attended a writer’s conference there with my friend Lee Child. I love the place.

The Key Lime Festival is just what it sounds like — a big juicy celebration of key limes and especially Key Lime Pie. The dessert is one of my favorites, and one of Judge Willa Carson’s favorites, too. Activities including a key lime rum tasting, a key lime pie eating contest, and a brewery tour and tasting at the Waterfront Brewery. (They make a great beer called Key Lime WitNess!)

Key Lime Pie at Festival

Besides all of the above, here are five reasons why I think we NEED to attend the Key Lime Festival next year.

  1. Key Lime Pie was invented in Florida! One of the many reasons I love this state and a good number of my books take place there.
  2. It would be a fantastic way to pay homage to Ernest Hemingway and visit his famous house in Key West.
  3. There’s a Key Lime Cocktail Sip & Stroll, where guests are invited to JUDGE some of the best martinis and margaritas in Florida. Now, how could that possibly be a bad thing? I think any activity where we get to play “judge” can be considered a tribute to Judge Willa Carson 🙂
  4. We could take a ghost tour. For mystery writers and mystery lovers, this is an enticing way to cap off a day full of sugar and sun. Key West is considered one of the most haunted cities in the United States. What could we discover? What new books could such a tour inspire?
  5. The festival looks like a lot of fun, and Ernest Hemingway seems to have taught us that taking time to relax in the tropics of Florida leads to inspired and productive work sessions!

So what do you think? Which part of the Key Lime Festival sounds like something you would enjoy?
