What Keeps Lee Child (And Me) Writing?

Magic

I spent the day yesterday responding to email from you, the best readers in the world. Communicating with you directly is the second best part of my job.

Sometimes we have very lively conversations. You often disagree with me, and each other.

You tell me what you like, what you don’t like, and why. You share where I got it right and what my work means to you. You tell me where I got it wrong and why you’ll never read my books again. (Okay, that’s not exactly the best part of my mail …) Regardless of what you write to me, though, I love hearing from you.

What’s so great about having readers spout off directly to me?

For a while, when we inhabit the same story from afar, we are there together. When you read my books, they actually come alive for you — and for me.

That’s the magic. My writer’s dream come true. I suspect it’s every writer’s dream come true.

I hope it’s every reader’s dream come true, too.

Your letters and emails and comments here and elsewhere demonstrate concretely the magic we create together.

When the going gets tough, what keeps this writer going?

Once again, my friend Lee Child put it well. The tall guy has a way with words, doesn’t he? Have a listen.

One Response to What Keeps Lee Child (And Me) Writing?

I can’t disagree with either of you. On the days when I’d rather do anything but write, it’s the enthusiasm of the people who read my books that give me just enough motivation to open the file and do my job. While I will always write, because that’s just what I do, it’s because of them that I keep it on the front burner instead of the back. 🙂
