Don’t Know Jack: Behind the Book

The Hunt For Reacher

Begins now: Don’t Know Jack

Here’s the setup:

It’s been a while since we first met Lee Child’s Jack Reacher in Killing Floor. Fifteen years and sixteen novels later, Reacher still lives off the grid, until trouble finds him, and then he does whatever it takes, much to the delight of readers and the dismay of villains. Now someone big is looking for him. Who? And why? Hunting Jack Reacher is a dangerous business, as FBI Special Agents Kim Otto and Carlos Gaspar are about to find out. Otto and Gaspar are by-the-book hunters who know when to break the rules, but they Don’t Know Jack. Reacher is a stone cold killer. Is he their friend or their enemy? Only the secrets hidden in Margrave, Georgia will tell them.

Now, Behind the Book:

Readers ask me where I get my ideas. I usually tease, “I order them from ideas.com.” The truth is I don’t always know. Ideas spark, kindle my interest and sometimes explode into a novel or a series of novels. But in the case of Don’t Know Jack, I do remember the moment.

A couple of years ago, I was chatting with Lee Child at a book event in New York about his iconic character.

“Where is Reacher hiding?” I asked.
“Reacher doesn’t hide,” Lee said. Maybe a little huffily?

Lee’s a lot bigger than me. And he writes violence like a man with experience. I’ve always thought him a gentle giant, but …. I backpeddaled a bit.

“Right. But where does Reacher live?”
“Wherever he wants,” the tall guy said. I thought I dectected a slight challenge in his tone.

I backed out of arms’ reach before I pressed on. “He waits until trouble finds him and then he wipes the floor with the bad guys. Perfect. But what’s he doing between books?”

Lee shrugged, said nothing.

Tenaciously, I tried again.

“Reacher’s killed a lot of people by now. Sixteen books. A lot of bodies. Surely someone wants payback, don’t you think?”

Lee leveled the patented Reacher stare. “Who in his right mind would go looking for Reacher? You?”

Right. Only an idiot with a death wish — or an FBI agent who knows nothing about Reacher’s, er, talents — would undertake such a foolhardy quest. Even then, she wouldn’t do it if she had a choice.

But matching wits with Jack Reacher, now that would be interesting, I thought, even though it could very well be deadly. Then again, the bigger they are the harder they fall. Whoever takes Reacher down will become a legend in some circles.

What if a determined, ambitious woman …..

I was wondering how you were going to spin off a Reacher story, and you’ve got me hooked! That was a great ride, and I anxiously look forward to the next installment.

Who is Van Nguyen, other than Kim’s ex? How did the Wallace woman take Van from Kim and how was Kim involved (or not) with the scandal that sent Susan Kent into hiding out in Margrave?
To throw these characters into play so late in the story with so little explanation is very frustrating! I like that while the agents are sure Reacher is a bad guy at first, that everyone involved that actually met Reacher clearly state otherwise: dangerous beyond doubt, but honest and noncorruptable. I liked having the story pick up in Margrave so many years later and show how the town was doing.

Thanks, Lisa! Glad you enjoyed the story. Yes, some mysteries about Kim Otto’s backstory remain….stay tuned!

I found out about this book reading The Reacher Report when Lee Child talked about the book and recommended it for the people that liked Reacher – how could I resist? Just finished reading the book and I am looking forward to the next one – Reacher has managed to spend a lot of time working through a lot of nasty people which should keep agents Otto and Gaspar busy!

    • Diane Capri April 28, 2013 at 9:40 am #

You bet, Steve! I’m counting on that to keep us all going…Glad you enjoyed the book!

I am a huge Lee Childs fan, and I seem to always be waiting for the next Reacher adventure. So while waiting on the next release, I was excited to find Don’t Know Jack. Two words…loved it! You absolutely wrote to the essence of the Reacher character. When will I be able get the second in the series?

    • Diane Capri April 28, 2013 at 9:41 am #

Thanks, Joan! So glad you enjoyed Agents Otto and Gaspar! I’m writing furiously on Get Back Jack. Meanwhile, have you read Jack in a Box and Jack and Kill?

Hey there just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The words in your content seem to be running
off the screen in Internet explorer. I’m not sure if this is a formatting issue or something to do with browser compatibility but I figured I’d post to let
you know. The design and style look great though! Hope you get the issue solved soon.
    Thanks
